- How did the Immigrant Centre help you to find a job in Canada?
My facilitator helped me on getting ready for job interviews, how to write a good and target resume and how to search advertising online. My coach always encourages me, she always said positive words. This was vital for me to gain confidence in my interview and do not lose hope.
- What types of job search techniques did you use to find your job?
I search on websites as job bank and Workopolis. But I also went into company websites that were related to my professional field and sent resumes to the emails that I found in the “careers” area.
- What differences have you noticed between working in Canada and working in your home country?
In Brazil I worked in a bank, so here in my Canadian job it’s totally different workplace, with young people in a different kind of environment.
Advice to other Immigrants/Newcomers:
- What advice would you give to immigrants and newcomers looking for work
Spend time working on your resume (according to the recommendations that you will receive in workshops offered by Immigrant Centre). This part is important because you need to leave your resume only with relevant information according to the position that you are applying for. If you have experience and feel confident with your English, take around one week applying for jobs that are specific, in your field. After one week you get to see other entry-levels positions. If you want a job within your professional area, I recommend using this initial time looking for specific jobs. Never lose your hope, you will receive feedback however, sometimes this part takes a while. Come prepared for this and not put off. After a while, when you get your job you will feel accomplished and you will see that all initial pain was worth it. Spend enough time looking for jobs. In a week I applied for over 100 positions, but in my second interview I got the job.
