The Immigrant Centre depends on volunteers to enhance its services to newcomers. Here is a list of some of the ways volunteers are involved at the Immigrant Centre. Please note that even though a volunteer position is listed, there may not be current openings for that position.
- One-to-One Citizenship Tutor – 1.5 hour weekly commitment, helping a permanent resident prepare for the citizenship test.
- One-to-One English Tutor – 1.5 hour weekly commitment, helping newcomers develop their English language skills
One-to-One English Tutor
Duties and Responsibilities
Help newcomers develop their English language skills
Prepare materials and topics of discussion for each meeting
Provide clients with feedback on their progress
Qualifications and Skills
Desire to help immigrants learn English
Sound knowledge and understanding of both written and oral English
Ability to instruct and offer guidance
EAL/ESL (English as an Additional/Second Language) or other previous teaching experience an asset
Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds
Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Must have strong time management and organization skills
Flexible schedule with sessions lasting 1.5 hours
Minimum three-month commitment
One meeting per week minimum
