Volunteer of the Month: Duong Doan
Since November 2016, Duong Doan has been coming to the Immigrant Centre on Saturday afternoons to volunteer as a Computer Training Facilitator. He arrived in Winnipeg a year ago, and this is his first volunteer job ever. “I had a lot of support from community, so doing volunteer job helps me to contribute back to the community.”
Before coming to Canada, Duong worked for over 20 years as a software developer in Vietnam. While he continues his search for a job in his field, Duong uses his knowledge and skills to help newcomers learn the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, E-mail and Internet. He is also working on developing an application for the Computer Training Program to register new class participants, and monitor their progress and attendance.
Duong is still just as committed to volunteering, as he was when he started almost a year ago. “I am happy to see the progress of clients every Saturday.”
