Volunteer of the Month: Rodrigo Damas

Nine months ago, Rodrigo Damas arrived in Winnipeg from Brazil, and since then he
has become a familiar Rodrigo Damasface at the Immigrant Centre. “I first came to the Centre as a client” he says. “I was surprised. The service is outstanding. Everything I needed you guys provided for me.”

Rodrigo began taking English Conversation Classes at the Immigrant Centre. In October, as his English language ability steadily improved, he applied for a volunteer position at the Centre. By January, he was assisting another client in our One-to-One English program. “Volunteering for me is great. I can improve my English, meet friends and learn about their countries.  I think it’s a good experience.”

Even though he is balancing two jobs, attending English classes and still adjusting to life in Winnipeg, Rodrigo has proven himself to be a reliable and dedicated volunteer. These days you can find him in our computer lab, where he volunteers once per week as a Computer Training Facilitator, helping newcomers learn the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, Email and the Internet.

Rodrigo is currently looking for full-time employment in his field; Facility Management or Property Management. In the meantime, he continues to share his time, knowledge and positive attitude with clients at the Immigrant Centre. “I feel comfortable here. Everybody is so nice. I ask people if they know about the Immigrant Centre. The service is so good and it’s free.”

The Immigrant Centre thanks you, Rodrigo, for your time and dedication.
